My Year in Photos / Project 365 For 2008

POST #    2925

On January 1st, 2008, I started out on an insane project that many other people have done: taking at least one photo every day for the entire year. After taking the photo, I eventually (usually not the next day) put them onto flickr. Some, but not all, of the photos have appeared here. But the photos are all in one set on flickr.

You may think taking a photo every day for 365 days is easy, but I actually found it really, really hard. It was extra hard in 2008 because there were 366 days.

I encourage you to take a look at the photo set that turned out. It's an interesting capsule into one year of my life.

Rest in Peace, Mortimer. We'll Miss You Buddy

POST #    2851

Four years ago in October, when Shannan was living in Virginia, she sent an email saying that she was a mamma. Living in a bad area of Norfolk, Shannan went to the animal shelter looking for a dog to keep her company and maybe scare away any possible intruders. What she left with was a cat that she described as "the cutest thing" she's ever seen. How did she walk away with that cat? Well, he caught her eye and the volunteer at the shelter talked her into spending some time with the cat. After that, her fate was sealed and she was the proud new owner of a 3 or 4 year old male Abyssinian cat. Above are the first two photos she sent out of the cat we named Mortimer.

Shannan went through some interesting times with Mortimer while down in Virginia. She learned that he loved French fries from McDonalds (really, who doesn't), that he's scared of brooms (we thought the previous owner might have taken a broom to him), and that he loves to eat paper. There was also a moment, soon after the adoption, when Shannan thought she lost Mort for good. She was outside with Mort in her arms (with a harness and leash) when there was a loud noise that naturally scared her new cat. In unfamiliar territory, he ran off to hide in an unknown location. Almost a day later, when Shannan still couldn't find Mortimer, she called me and I told her to try looking one more time. Eventually she found Mort hiding under a building a few blocks away.

After spending a year in Virginia, Shannan moved back to New York with Mortimer, which was a change for me considering I was living by myself and I'm slightly allergic to cats. I learned to adjust to both. For the next three years, Mortimer's weight went up and down - eventually leading to an operation to investigate the cause. There was some thickening in his intestine and he was found to have some kidney issues (renal amyloidosis), which aren't uncommon in Abyssinians.

Less than a year ago, we were told that Mortimer's kidney functions were getting worse and that they could eventually be a very serious issue. So we started giving him subcutaneous fluids a few times a week and a B12 shot in addition to varying medications. We also put him on a special diet of nutrient rich cat food that he seemed to love.

Last Wednesday morning (8/27), Mortimer had two seizures, something we had never seen before. Naturally, we took him to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Mort was found to have high blood pressure, high levels of acid in his stomach, and high toxin levels in his kidneys. It's possible that the blood pressure caused the seizures and the acid levels caused a loss of appetite (he didn't eat much for the two days prior). Mortimer spent the next two days at the vet's office, with hopes that the kidney levels would decrease with IV fluids, something that would be possible if the toxin levels were sudden. Unfortunately, those levels weren't decreasing, so it didn't make much sense for him to stay at the vet. Mortimer returned home Friday afternoon with the caveats that if he didn't eat, that he didn't have much energy, or was acting odd, it might be time to put him down.

Much to our dismay, Mort wasn't eating, he didn't have any energy, and he wasn't acting like himself. While he ate a little on Saturday, he didn't go crazy for the sushi we bought him or for anything else. On Sunday, we actually had to force feed him. Each day, we had to push him out from underneath the bed. By late Sunday afternoon, we could tell that Mortimer was in bad shape and possibly suffering. That was when we made the decision to let Mortimer go that night. While it was obviously a difficult decision, we know that it was the right one and that we tried everything possible to help prolong his life.

We had four great years with Mortimer, with so many great times, including some that we captured in photos. While we have a couple of photos from his final days, we prefer to remember the ones we have on this site and in the slideshow below.

Something Good In Mortimer's Diet?

POST #    2707

Good news for Mortimer. He actually gained weight when we took him to the vet last weekend, coming in at a whole half pound heavier than his previous visit. That's like 10% of his body weight! Maybe it's the Hill's Prescription Diet he's on, maybe it's his pills, or maybe it's his fluids. Whatever it is, it's great news. I don't think it's the pumpkin that he snuck a few licks of a week before his visit. If you look carefully, you can kind of see some discoloration on his chin area from it.

Hopefully on his next trip, he'll weigh even more.

Mortimer's Needles

POST #    2592

To help Mortimer's kidney function (one of his potential causes for weight loss), we recently started to give him IV fluids. We got a starter kit from our vet, but just got a box full of supplies that included 100 needles! It seems like a crazy amount, but since we got 12 bags of Lactated Ringer's solution, we might actually need all the needles. So much for Shannan's dislike of needles.

Mortimer is a Skinny Bitch

POST #    2574

Since the bitch word has yet to be symbolically banned in New York City, I'm going to use it a few times here. Bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch. Even though Mortimer is neither female or a dog, I'm using bitch in an endearing way. Or something like that.

Anyway, when Mortimer went to the vet recently, we found out that he lost even more weight and is now 5 lbs 14 oz. I think Randolph could eat that much food in one sitting if given the option. It seems like Mort now has some kidney problems (common in abyssinians) in addition to his liver/intestine issues. We're going back to the vet tomorrow for some more tests and to learn how to give him a saline solution. Hopefully that, along with a kidney friendly diet, will help him put on a little heft. Right now, he's just skin and bones. Some might say that he's a 'ripster'.

Two Cats in Their Carriers

POST #    2569

Whenever we would cat sit my my parents' cat Bobo, all three cats would somehow rotate use of her cat carrier. Because they seemed to love it so much, we got a couple new carriers for Mortimer and Randolph. Two identical carriers. Actually, I think they're technically dog carriers. For some reason, they prefer the carrier positioned on the left even if we rotate them. They even fight for that carrier.

Sometimes they'll both be in the carriers at once, as pictured here. Don't they look like a disaffected married couple?

POST #    2511

We had some leftover fish last night from dinner so Shannan decided to give some to Mortimer. I'm generally against giving our cats food from the table, but Shannan was for it. Mortimer in Stitches

POST #    2485

Thankfully, our worst fears for Mortimer were not realized. There was a fear of cancer, but the doctors opened up little Mort, and did biopsies on his intestines and lymph nodes which came back negative. While it was a costly way to rule cancer out, it was obviously the right decision.

The stitches above were removed last night and our vet says that they are healing perfectly. The only problem is that, because of his weight loss and mostly shaved belly, he looks even skinnier than he did before. But, we're hopeful that his hair and weight will come back.

Mortimer in Recovery at the Vet

POST #    2478

I've briefly mentioned it before, but Mortimer has had some health issues recently. He's been dropping weight and lost a whole pound in a month between his last visits to the vet. While weight loss of that magnitude would be fine for a fat cat, Mortimer was already on the light side for his breed. With tests ruling out a thyroid condition, his doctor wanted to rule out cancer, so he had a biopsy earlier this week. While we don't know the results of the tests yet, we're cautiously optimistic. He's also recovering from the surgery well, passing his food and water tests as well as pooping right in front of me.

Unfortunately for Mortimer, he's at the office for the weekend as he recovers and we go to a wedding in Illinois. It's for the better, because they take really good care of him at the New York Cat Hospital and he should be watched pretty carefully. Also unfortunate for Mort is that they had to shave a lot of hair on his belly. I paid Moritmer a visit yesterday and he was obviously pretty happy to see me.

Mort's newest thing is sitting on our Roomba. A couple of times, he's actually pressed a button on it. One of those times, he actually managed to press clean, causing the Roomba to play it's little "I'm going to clean tune" followed by the sound trucks make when they back up. As suspected, that kind of surprised the cat.

Someone's Missing some Belly Fur

POST #    2396

A little more than a week ago, we took Mortimer to the vet for a sonogram in attempt to find out the cause of his weight loss. Blood tests and x-rays didn't show anything (the lengths we go for pets!), which is why we had to get the sonogram. That finally revealed (after belly shaving - see another view) that Mortimer had a thickened small intestine, which may cause decreased absorption of the nutrients in his food. We were told to give Mort some prescription food that has protein sources that are new to him. What's crazy is the flavors this food comes in. Not your typical liver, fish, or chicken, but duck, rabbit, and venison! Our cat now eats better than most humans. Hopefully, this will result in some weight gain for the little dude. We've certainly noticed a positive change in his personality though.

Incidentally, if you're looking for a vet I highly recommend the New York Cat Hospital. Despite being so far from our apartment, we find the staff there to be the biggest cat lovers we've ever seen. Maybe it's just our cats, but the service that they provide is worth the inconvenience of the commute.

P.S. - I'm told that this photo is very un-Tien Mao like.

It's not often that Mortimer doesn't like having his picture taken, but sometimes he's not drawn to the camera, but shies away from it.

Squinty Mort

POST #    2231

Ever since we got Randolph, there's been a noticeable change in Mortimer's personality. Obviously, this was to be expected, but when we got back from vacation, we saw an improved Mort. Somehow in our time away, he and Randolph have become a little more adjusted. Perhaps it's because Randolph doesn't chase him as much anymore or maybe it's something else. Whatever it is, it's nice to see a little of the old Mortimer again.

The Seldom Cuddled Mortimer

POST #    2180

Mortimer hardly liked being cuddled before we added Randolph to the household. Now, it's even rarer that he'll jump into your lap. So sad. Because it's obvious that when you get him there, he really loves it. Well, at least sometime.

Mortimer Still Adjusting; Food Diary Redux, Day 3

POST #    2153

Having my parents' cat Bobo around is helping Mortimer deal with Randolph - mostly because Randolph and Bobo chase each other. Shortly after this picture though, Randolph and Bobo chased each other around for a bit. But the reason he loves Bobo the most is that he eats any food she doesn't finish right away.

2006 Food Diary, Day 3:
8:52 - Still warm everything bagel with scallion cream cheese from Baglesmith.
9:23 - Work, start of 25 oz of water from Nalgene. Finished at 11:31.
11:40 - One substantial sized strawberry
12:48 p.m. - 20 oz bottle of water with lunch. Same sandwich as Monday from BP.
2:23 - 26 oz of water. Finished at 3:30.
3:53 - one chestnut - at this point, I'm getting a little hungry.
3:58 - 10 Veggie Stix
4:02 - small piece spicy chocolate
4:05 - half a fig newton-like fig bar
4:09 - one stick Stride gum
4:27 - six nacho cheese Doritos. I think they should have a variety with extra flavor, something like extra nacho cheese. Mmm.
4:37 - 18 oz of water. Finished 5:17.
5:46 - 6 more Doritos
6:43 - 10 peanuts
7:12 - Dinner at Rialto. Three glasses water, one mojito, two pieces of bread with butter, calamari with chipotle dipping sauce, grilled pork chop topped with shredded apple in a honey sauce with mashed potatoes and spinach, shared an ice cream sundae.
10:47 - Home. One pint water.

Mortimer's Comfort Spot

POST #    2146

With Randolph all over the place, Mort can find few areas of comfort. For him, those are generally places where 'Dolph (we're not really calling him that) can't jump to yet. While he can get to the table, Randolph can't jump to the table directly yet.

Mortimer, Slowly Adjusting

POST #    2137

Mort Mort isn't too happy about the new addition to the house. I think he mostly hates the fact that Randolph chases him around. But really, what doesn't Randolph chase? Sadly, Mort isn't eating quite as much as he normally does, but he probably needed to lose some weight anyway. He's also not quite as social as he once was. At least the situation between the two is slowly getting better.

POST #    2125

Still no news on why the photos aren't showing up in my RSS, but I'll investigate that one. Mort Mort a Little Sick Sick

POST #    2118

So last weekend we took Mortimer to the vet after for some issues he's been having and we got the report back yesterday. He's got an elevated white blood cell count, which we're told is a sign of some sort of infection, so he's going to go on antibiotics for a couple of weeks.

He's also on the high range of "average" for kidney and renal issues. Which I guess isn't all that surprising as he's a pureblooded abyssinian.

For Mortimer: Collar or No?

POST #    2014

For as long as Mortimer's been adopted, he's had a collar and tags on, but recently we made the decision to take them off. When down in Virginia, it seemed to make sense to have it on as he could theoretically run outside now and again (one time he almost ran off). But now that he's in Brooklyn, inside all day, and would have a hard time making it outdoors, it's not all that necessary to wear.

So we recently decided to remove his collar. It's nice because Mort always scratched at it and it seemed to annoy him, but there are drawbacks. First off, he looks naked without it and he can't show his Michigan pride (he's very upset about that Alamo Bowl). But the biggest reason why Mort not wearing a collar (besides potentially getting lost) is that you never know when he's walking around. Prior to removal, the jingle of the tags around his neck was a dead giveaway to when he was moving around. Now, he's much more stealthy than before.

We need to get him some tic tacs to put in his coat pocket. They might help with his breath too.

A Tisket, a Tasket, a Mort in a Basket

POST #    1981

Before Mortimer moved up here to the big city, he had a little bed that he would hang out in all the time. And by bed, I mean a basket that was lined with a blanket-like object. Once he moved here, he took to sleeping on one of the couches or the chair and at night sleeping in the bed, but not his old basket. Recently though, Shannan bought another basket for all her winter gloves/hats/scarves, which Mort quickly took to. And that's become his new bed. When in doubt, Mort is no longer just "under the bed" but probably hanging out in his basket.

Mortimer Sleeping on the Chair

POST #    1947

There was an article in Tuesday's Science Times on the sleep cycles of animals and with it came a nice chart of how much different animals got. Cats average 13.2 hours of sleep a day with 26% of it being REM sleep. Mortimer has plenty of places to sleep, but I wonder exactly how much sleep he gets. For some reason, I think it's more than 13.2 hours.

More Mortimer on the Couch

POST #    1896

Here's some more of Mort on that couch again.

So not only does Mortimer prance around while we sleep, he's taken to pawing at my lip to wake me up. It's not like he's clawing away to the point of blood, but more like a gentile scratch with one nail to wake me up. He's done this a few times this week and we think it might be due to the decrease in the amount of food we leave out.

Hey Look, It's Mortimer on the Red Couch Again

POST #    1890

I swear, how many photos of Mort on the couch have I put up here. Good god. And how many more have I taken?? I don't even want to think about it. I think I need a better hobby. He might actually like that couch more than beating me to bed and laying on my pillow, which he did the other night. I had to casually turn the pillow sideways so I could lay down on another one. He was quite confused.

But the strangest behavior Mort has, not that having a favorite couch is strange, is how he prances around the bed. You're lying there, either sleeping or trying to go to sleep and he jumps onto the bed, strolls over to your face and pseudo-scratches the area around your face. There's no way you can go to bed or stay asleep when he does that. I wonder if that's common with other cats, or if that's a unique Mortimer trait.

Mortimer Looking for Hiding Places

POST #    1850

Since he's moved up from Virginia, I think Mortimer has explored every part of my apartment. As we move stuff around though, he's always nearby and moves into any newly vacated square footage. There, he surveys the empty spot then moves along as his interest fades. There are some spots that he likes though, like under the coffee table. Because the table is so low, he has to dip his body to get under. It's rather amusing.

Mortimer Looking Familiar

POST #    1797

I previously used a very similar picture, but his eyes were closed in the other one.

I was chatting with my friend Calvin yesterday and he was saying how he wanted a cat and everyone was saying he should get one. But when we started discussing it in more detail, he started to have second thoughts. I was saying how getting a cat could be kind of expensive and guessed that it could cost $3,000-$4,000 for a cat in NYC. Food, litter, vet costs all being higher in New York. Of course, I don't really know how much it costs to have a cat here. I'll soon find out though as Mort is moving up in two weeks! Cat and food blog, here I come!!

Mortimer in Bed...Take 3

POST #    1690

Here's more of that big headed, lazy cat named Mortimer. I think we have lots in common. He has a lot more facial hair though.

The Mortimer Bed Series

POST #    1679

I have a bunch of photos of Mortimer lounging on the bed, tired looking, and lethargic. The first one was last week. Here's the second.

And have you seen Mortimer's Catster page? Someone made one, and it wasn't me.

A Lethargic Mortimer

POST #    1664

Mortimer is a "lover," following you around, demanding attention, but after he visited the vet, he was lethargic and anti-social. I guess that's what happens when you're poked, prodded, and shot up with some drugs. But he's still damn cute.

No Mort, Don't Jump!

POST #    1651

I have this pretty useless ledge above the stairs in my apartment. All it seems to do is collect dust. I could put something there, but I haven't found anything good yet. Mortimer seems to like it though. Maybe he can dust it for me too.

Unfortunately for him, there's no radiator in my apartment.

All a brief respite from my China pictures. More when I'm back in the office later.

Ack! Cat in My Kitchen!!

POST #    1628

Mortimer seemed to like exploring my kitchen. Good thing he didn't get hair all over it, otherwise it might get in all those things I cook. BWHAHAHAHA.

Mortimer Heads to the Vet

POST #    1623

Mortimer had to go to the veterinarian last weekend and had a couple more trips this week. He was none too happy with the trip last week and actually preferred being in his carrier to out of it. I'm not sure how things went yesterday with his mouthwork (I hear one tooth three teeth removed), but I hope everything is okay with the little guy.

Oh, and how great is the Internet? I can post an entry that I had ready from around the world, thirteen hours ahead of Eastern standard time.

Loving Packaging

POST #    1614

For some reason, Mortimer didn't really like hanging out on my wood floors. He seemed to prefer hanging out on the packaging that was left over from the lovely painting I was given. Because I didn't get enough of him when he was up, I'll be seeing him again this weekend.

Mortimer In a Feeding Frenzy

POST #    1607

Watching Mortimer eat is a little insane. He pretty much sticks his head into the bowl and goes to town, finishing his food in what seems like 5 minutes.

Also, I think he fits in perfectly in my apartment. After a night of exploration, he settled right in. He also seems to blend in well and match the colors in my apartment. Unfortunately, he's no longer with me.

Mortimer Has Non-Smelly Feet

POST #    1595

The rumors are true! Mortimer hits The Big Apple, er, The World's Second Home. These pictures are from his home down south, but I'm sure there will be many photos of him in New York in the future.

Mortimer Loves the Netflix

POST #    1575

Yet another reason why Mortimer is great. He loves Netflix. Well, at least he likes licking the adhesive on the envelopes. He also loves his stuffed monkey. Or is it a gorilla?

Mortimer's Head Shots, Part 3

POST #    1563

So I guess a lot of my pictures of Mortimer are head shots, so I don't know why I've been calling the last three entries head shots since it seems like most of them are his head only anyway. Except the one of him licking himself.

Mortimer's Head Shots, Part 1

POST #    1540

You know, Jake has previously said that he's gunning for me, but really, is there any competition? Mortimer isn't my cat, I don't spend all day with him, but one thing's for sure, he's so much better looking than Thompson. Thompson may be cute, but Mortimer is sexy.

A Sunny Mortimer

POST #    1506

Damn, check out those nails on him. You know, it's amazing that you can see sun when you're not actually at work.

And there seems to be a "Furry Friday" tag at Flickr.

Almost Human

POST #    1484

Mortimer almost seems to think he's human. Sitting on the desk, making like he's doing work. Then again, he also likes to eat paper and put his paws on your face when you're sleeping. My photos of him from Thanksgiving weekend are now gone, but I'll be spending a week in Virginia, so I should see plenty of Mortimer. Whether that's good or bad for this site remains to be seen.

Lots of Mortimer

POST #    1471

When Mortimer is just sitting there, he doesn't seem to mind at all if I take pictures of him. Lucky for him, he will see more of me in a little more than a week. Or is it lucky for me?

The Serious Side of Mortimer

POST #    1461

Here, Mortimer shows his serious side. Quietly thinking to himself, "Who is this fool with the camera all up in my face? I think I'm going to rub my nose in his face to see if he's allergic to me."

All Mortimer, All the Time...

POST #    1445

Okay, maybe not. But every Friday until I run out of pictures, which may be sooner than later since I don't live with a cat. Lucky for everyone, I have a nice cache of pictures that I stockpiled over Thanksgiving. Then again, I'm not very good at keeping up with the weekly features (see: Mao Quotes).

There was a NY Times article about bloggers that posted cat photos a few weeks ago, but sadly I don't have the link. Anyway, I thought it was interesting. Not like you're coming here for hard-hitting content or anything. Or the photos for that matter. See semi-blurry cat photo above and photo on wrong setting two posts ago.

Ladies and Gents, Meet Mortimer

POST #    1358

Down in Virginia, Shannan has acquired a cat. While I'm semi-allergic to cats, I can't wait to spend some time with Mortimer and his owner. I don't know anything about cats, but I've been told that Mortimer is an abyssinian and is less likely to cause allergies. I guess I'll eventually find out.

Oh, and if you're wondering where the name came from, I came up with it. After Mortimer Duke from Trading Places. And his shirt says "fleadom fighter". And yes, he is already a spoiled cat.
