Disturbingly Delicious - Smucker's Uncrustables

POST #    2217

uncrustable.jpgAfter Saturday's Cyclones game, there was a little giveaway of Smucker's Uncrustables sandwiches, something that I'm not sure that I even knew about let alone eaten before. I didn't actually grab one on the way out, but someone else handed me theirs (apparently they thought it was a disgusting concept). Slightly hungry and very curious, I opened the Uncrustable up and started to eat.

In case you're wondering what an Uncrustable is, here's the general idea - a packaged sandwich with different types of fillings with a crimped crustless edge. I had the peanut butter-strawberry sandwich which was just a peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich on white bread. There were two layers of "creamy" peanut butter surrounding the jam and applied to the bread. As far as I was concerned, the sandwich was pretty tasty. While the bread seemed slightly damp and soggy, I liked the even distribution and ratio of peanut butter to jam. The best part might have been that there was no possibility of jam drippage.

While I liked the sandwich, I'm not sure if I would actually buy these in a store - mostly because it's not hard to make a PB&J and because it's probably much cheaper to make one yourself. That said, if I was going somewhere where I couldn't make a sandwich, I would be all over these.

And if you think these are disgusting, there's also a grilled cheese flavor, which I'm not sure I would ever, ever try.

They sell these at the JetBlue terminal at JFK; I had one once when I couldn't think of anything else I wanted, and now I have a small addiction to them.  They really did get the ratio perfect.

Interesting giveaway, but I suppose it makes sense because lots of families would be at the game. The strategy is for parents (read: moms) to buy them as something to throw into their kids' bags as a snack. By the time they thaw, the kids will be hungry and Uncrustables will be able to sate their peanut-butter-and-jam hunger!

Um, Jonas likes the cheese ones. And, no, that does not make me a bad mother.

Jonas's dad likes the grilled cheese ones as well. It also has fake toaster marks, and you nuke it with a carboard thing to keep it crusty ish.

i was going to comment on "spoiled children" and "lazy parents" until i read margaret's comment, because i'm sure she's a real swell mom and all. when i first saw these come on the market, all i could think of was bratty screaming kids who would tantrum or bully their way out of eating their crusts, and the disciplineless parents who enable them. i'm sure for babies they are not only handy but easy to chew. do the cheese ones get grilled or eaten cold???
