Din Tai Fung at the Sheraton LaGuardia

POST #    1949

Friday night, I went to Din Tai Fung's "traveling road show" at the Sheraton in Flushing. For about nine days, the Taiwaneese restaurant sets up shop at the Sheraton selling a reasonable facsimile of their famous soup dumplings. Unfortunately, I have this cold and was severely congested to the point that I couldn't taste anything.

Nevertheless, I forged on, eating the dishes that we ordered and just imagined how good they tasted. From what I was told, the soup dumplings were not as good as the original restaurant in Taipei (of course not) but were still better than all other soup dumplings in New York.

Din Tai Fung's last day in New York is Sunday, November 20th with reservations needed to eat there. Unfortunately, it is fully booked so I won't be tasting it again this year. Unless I travel to one of their 25 locations around the world.

My girlfriend and I are almost 99% positive that we went to Din Tai Fung last year when we were in Taipei. Her aunt and uncle live there, and during the 3-4 days we spent in Taipei, we must have had 20 meals or more. We would sometimes literally go from one meal to the next. Her uncle was so excited for us to try all that Taipei had to offer. She sent me the link to this entry this morning and quoted me as saying "These are so good, I think I could eat 100 of them in one sitting" about the soup dumplings when we were there. So thanks for the memory!

Din Tai Fung is justifiably famous for their soup dumplings but their chicken soup and red bean buns are also damn good. Although I don't know why they only give you 4 red bean buns per order instead of the 8 that they have back in Taipei. The prices that they're charging here is almost obscenely high though. But oh well, beats flying back to TPE for a soup dumpling fix. =)

You normally do a great job of making food look really appetizing, but, man... you're killing me today! How am I supposed to go to bed without some dumplings now? That looks awesome...

Hi Tien,

Your photos are great! I came across your site in search of Din Tai Fung soup dumplings - do they come around the same time every year?
