Mortimer Looking Familiar

POST #    1797

I previously used a very similar picture, but his eyes were closed in the other one.

I was chatting with my friend Calvin yesterday and he was saying how he wanted a cat and everyone was saying he should get one. But when we started discussing it in more detail, he started to have second thoughts. I was saying how getting a cat could be kind of expensive and guessed that it could cost $3,000-$4,000 for a cat in NYC. Food, litter, vet costs all being higher in New York. Of course, I don't really know how much it costs to have a cat here. I'll soon find out though as Mort is moving up in two weeks! Cat and food blog, here I come!!

was that a year? cause I'd have to say thats way off.

yes, per year. probably less right? i also think he would spoil a cat.

the first year would be the most expenseive with the spaying/neutering, etc. and that runs a few hundred. To spend that kind of money, thats gotta be a big cat...id bet ill spend less then $1000 including the vet.

yep, much less. we adopted maddie from north shore animal league and i think it was $100 because she was over a year, and that included spaying. she had a couple other things like worms and a hernia so a few more vet bills, but probably not more than another $250, and food/litter is ~$30/month for two cats.

if they got an adult cat already spayed/neutered it could be much cheaper. my only costs for my cat are food/litter. (unless i have to take her to the vet, which is rare, and still never that expensive.)
I think mort is a bit freakish in his expenses. (sorry shannan!)

apparently, he's worried about cat hair, stinkyness, poop, time and stuff like that too. but if he did get a cat, he could name it hobbes.

3k to 4k for a cat? i have three cats and i spend less than 1k for all of them together. wildly inaccurate. dogs are more expensive.

christina: oh i wasnt the one quoting mort's expenses at 3000-4000. i quoted at $2000.. you know for clothes, root canals, cat insurance, seafood flavored tooth paste, mouth wash, and allergy controlled foods.. yeah, mort is high maintenance, but he is so damn cute!

generally lucy (not a cat, but looks sort of like one after a summer haircut) does not cost much, but the few times she's been sick it always has to be on a sunday when the animal clinic is closed and it ends up costing me like $500 at the animal hospital, which sucks, but i wouldn't not do it. perhaps calvin can catsit and see how he feels about it?
