Clip, Clip

POST #    1722

In front of my building, there used to be three abandoned bicycles. No longer. With the handy tool pictured above, they are now ready to be disposed of. I put a post on Craig's List last night with the a few details. There was such a large response that I took it down. Crazy.

The funny thing is that while I was removing the bikes, nobody said anything. All I got was a couple of looks. Cutting the chains wasn't easy even though I had this huge cutter. No cops came out of the police station across the street either. I wonder if I could replicate the Neistat Brother's video.

What kind of responses did you get from the people who saw your CL post? Outrage? Concern? Curiosity?

Offers to buy them?

most people want to pick a bike up. i'm not sure they realize that two of them really need serious work.

You should see if Recycle a Bicyle wants them. They are a charity that refurbishes and sells donated bikes. They have shops in DUMBO and the East Village.

What's scary is that noone said anything to you about it while you were boltcutting away. Makes me even more paranoid about locking my bike up - even with that ridiculous 20 lb. elephant chain I have. I gather that the locks you clipped weren't particularly substantial?

there was one that was very flimsey. one wasn't much thinner than the kryptonite chains. and the third was just a little thinner than that.

the two thicker ones took about 5 minutes each.

This City seriously needs a policy on abandoned bikes. We are so far behind other cities in this regards.

Funny how so many bikes are abandoned and ignored by the City, yet the NYPD likes to steal legally parked and non-abandoned ones during Critical Mass.
