Strawberry Season? Nope.

POST #    1548

I went to the grocery store the other day and bought strawberries. I have no clue if it's strawberry season - I would guess not since I haven't seen too many - but these looked good when at the store. As you might have imagined, they weren't all that good. But they did smell good, for when I opened my fridge last night, it was quite fragrant.

Since I was a child, whenever we would eat strawberries, there would be some sugar on the side. I'm not sure if the sugar was used to lure me to fruit, or just the way things were done, but to this day, I love strawberries with sugar. One of the best parts is licking the leftover sugar at the end. It's like sweetened strawberry juice! Tasty!!

strawberries and sugar (gross). my mom would slice up strawberries and pour sugar over the tops of them. it would create thick sugary juices, almost like if it were strawberry soup. but i hate added sugars to my fruit (unless it is rhubarb). so i would have a special bowl of strawberries, up until the last time i visited my parents when i received a nasty sugar bowl with strawberries. how dare they forget what i like!

Ahhh yes, Shannan the Queen of all picky eaters. Wasn't it you who would only eat tortellini for 25 years of your life... hehe. (woops, guess I just aged you, huh!)
That picture of the strawberries reminds me of my mother's strawberry shortcake - which is the best ever. Drool.

christina: tortellini is only the best food ever!

didn't we have this strawberry conversation in regard to special k?

i like strawberries and yogurt. it's actually the only way i will eat yogurt.

nope, we actually never discussed this specifically. but who remembers anymore?

and while i really like the sugar/strawberry soup, i dislike tortellini. it's a strange balance.

Disliking mexican??!.. now we can't have any of that. ;P Love your post, I had that for lunch today, which is probably not the best thing, since I'm allergic to them(strawberries, not mexicans).

Some telltale signs of good strawberries:
1) it's a month after May and before September
2) smaller tend to be better
3) strawberry should be red all the way through or chances are there was some artificial coloring
4) you don't need to add sugar because they are already THAT sweet

We should take a trip to N. California or something. I spent a whole summer learning about strawberries (and fruits) there and now everything I see in NYC grocery stores seem like fakes!

they weren't un-sweet or anything, i just wanted them sweeter.
