The Slice Pizza Club Hits Midtown's Angelo's Pizza

POST #    1472

Last night, Slice had it's seventh pizza club (has it been 7 already?!?) with a trip to Angelo's Pizza in midtown Manhattan. Not only was there pizza on the agenda, but ice skating was also on tap.

While Angelo's location is great (at least for tourists, midtown office people, and revenue), I was not a huge fan of their pizza. While they do have a coal oven, the oven does not guarantee a great pizza. Signs that the pizza was from the oven were evident, like the charred crust, but it wasn't the oven that turned me off, it was the dough. Totally flavorless. People were adding hot pepper, salt, olive oil, all bad signs that your pizza is bland. The only pie that had any flavor was the pepperoni (others included plain, mushroom, sausage, and prosciutto) and that was because of the pepperoni. The crust was very light, but that didn't turn out to be a good thing. On the plus side, Angelo's was pretty accommodating to the biggest pizza club yet - 18 people.

I ended up not ice skating because I'm lame and don't know how to skate. So I just walked around and took some photos.

And for the record, I only had four slices.

I think the problem with the dough was that there was no moisture left in the crust. I like there to be at least a little chew, rather than the hard-crouton style stuff we were chowing last night. The sausage was a little odd too, but I can't place my finger on why.

Laren pointed out that the slices were pretty soggy as well. Tsk tsk.

i thought it was ok, but not my favorite. the mushroom pizza was very good. none of mine was soggy. but we did decide the crust was a little too "fluffy" or "spongy". i give it a solid B. the only place i usually eat in midtown is burger joint and i think i'll stick to that.
