Along the Chesapeake

POST #    1437

Our return from Virginia was by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Route 13, a beautiful stretch of road that costs $12 to use. The 17 mile road at the mouth of the Chesapeake goes above the bay in long stretches of trestles and below the bay in two tunnels. The bridge-tunnel didn't use any government tax dollars and the northbound and southbound routes were completed at a total cost of $450,000,000. The northbound and southbound lanes were constructed 35 years apart with only a $50,000,000 difference in cost which included repairs and the expansion of some facilities, but no new tunnels. How's that for cost control?!?

if you can time it just right, sometime in your life you should try driving over the chesapeake bridge on the fourth of july during the fireworks show. it's pretty spectacular.

That bridge/tunnel and the subsequent ride up the Eastern shore is by far the best way to go from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area up to NJ/NY. I use it whenever I travel home.

i imagine that the ride wouldn't be quite as fun when cold and on your bike.

and shannan, i think i got out myself. if i wasn't sleeping, that is.
