The Thanksgiving Meal

POST #    1434

Down in Virginia for Thanksgiving, in possibly my first Thanksgiving away from home since...ever? I might have had one away from home during college, but I think I returned home every year. Shannan and I did some prep work Wednesday night and some cooking Thursday morning. It really wasn't all that hard making all the dishes, but the timing of it all was kind of difficult.

A rather small oven is not conducive to getting several items ready at once. Besides turkey, the menu included (clockwise from turkey): butternut squash with apples, cranberry sauce (fresh), green beans with bacon and onions, mashed potatoes (with lumps), cranberry sauce (canned), and candied yams. For appetizers, we had some cheese and crackers, deviled eggs, salad, and lobster bisque. Dessert was poached pears and pumpkin pie. An insane amount of food for five people, but ample leftovers for all those delicious turkey sandwiches.

Notes on the meal, no gravy since nobody really liked gravy much and the turkey didn't even need it. The turkey was prepared by brining it for a day, resulting in juicy and flavorful meat. There was no stuffing either because, again, nobody at the meal really liked stuffing. And we had plenty of food already.

Looks amazing, but how can people not like stuffing? Are you heathens or something?

So what's your connection to VA? I grew up in northern virginia, and the couples of times I've been to virginia beach I've never seen it that empty.

well, i don't think the early sunday morning helped the crowds much. that and the rain that went through the area the night before.

as far as my connection to VA, i'm doing a long distance relationship thingy to VA.

I'm with Jen, not liking stuffing is unnatural.

see, it's kind of like that whole joy luck club thing...adding stuff when not needed. okay, not really. i just don't dig the stuffing. then again, i've never really had it. details, details.

not that i know you, but if you buy the "turkey" Stove-Top stuffing (not the "chicken" flavor) follow the directions, and eat it...and you DON'T like the heaven on your fork...well, the only thing i can really say...is...may God have mercy on your soul.
