Oh Ice, Why Are You So Tasty

POST #    1181

I think I've always had this habit of chewing ice, but it has recently only gotten worse. It's been encouraged by the never-ending presence of ice in my apartment. To this point, the ice chewing has not caused me any trouble. I know it's not the best thing for my teeth, but it's just too addictive.

With my ice maker and the refrigerator's ability to crush that ice, now I don't even have to wait for the ice to melt to a manageable size. I can chew immediately. Instant gratification is the best!

Unrelated, tonight is wing night. Who's down? You know the drill, send me an email. I'll be there around 7.

Maybe you need a chew toy?

Posted by: corie at July 28, 2004 9:02 AM

hmm, will the chew toy be cold and crunchy?

Posted by: tien at July 28, 2004 9:21 AM

if you freeze it it would be.

Posted by: christina at July 28, 2004 9:55 AM

now i know what to get you as a belated housewarming gift. it would be like, you know, retro raver. you could wear it around your neck on a chain.

Posted by: corie at July 28, 2004 10:36 AM

but if i got a chew toy, i would have to wash it and stuff. now all i have to do is depress the lever.

hmm, retro raver - i'll have to bust out all my neon lights. oh, wait, i never had any.

I had the unrelenting desire to chew ice during my two pregnancies. It's a condition of iron deficiency.

I loved it, but chewing ice is bad, bad, bad for your teeth.

ice chewing = sexual frustration

Posted by: jocelyn at July 28, 2004 10:44 PM

Ice is too fattening, you should lay off having too much.

i think the comments youve gotten on this site have treated this as a bit of a joke.

i have this new habit myself, and am asking myself if this is a condition i have brought on due to something to do, or if this is something due to other activities; such as alchoholism or drug dependencies.
have you found any medical information or studies on this?
please email me about this weird thing, i dont think it is harmful...its water....but what is the cause of the urge to do it do you think?

I have an "eating ice" addiction and I found this
more intense when pregnant. I have chipped a tooth. Currently not pregnant and not sex deprived, but I do have iron deficiency issues.

My friends and i always go to this gas station called QT (quiktrip) and we always get a seperate cup just for the crushed ice! We all picked up the habit from one of our church friends and now we just can't help but eat ice while driving to and from places. i think what keeps us on ice is the weather! it's like 115 degrees outside! we live in Arizona! i've have also heard that chewing ice=sexual frustration... but i'm still hazy on that....
WE LOVE THE CRUSHED ICE AT QT!!!!!

I have ben addicted to ice since around age 7 or 8. I am now 32 years old and eat atleast 6 32 oz cups of crushed ice a day from jamba juice. My teeth just recent has a month ago began to ache at times, but that hasn't stop me from my all time favorite food/beverage. I have to have it daily. People on my job look at me like I am crazy I tried to hide my habit for awhile, but it never lasts because I have to store my ice in the fridge.

Chewing ice is a sign of iron defeciency or WORSE. some people need to have their blood levels checked or even a colonoscopy. BUT it is NOT bad for your teeth.

I too am big on chewing ice. I started when I was pregnant the first time. It went away after that and now I'm pregnant again and back at it. I have not heard that it is related to anything but I see many people say it has something to do with iron deficiencies. I have really low iron too. So maybe there is a connection. I figure I"m getting more than my 8 glasses of water a day! But I am worried about wearing down my teeth. My husband thinks I'm nuts. It's very embarassing for him when I make him order a cup of ice in the Tim Horton's drive-thru. I can't help it, it's like candy to me!

Ice chewing is a sign of anemia typically. I chew ice in the worst ways, and even though I have told my friends and family to tell me to stop chewing ice, I don't even realize I'm doing it. Now my cartilage in my jaw has worn down and I have TMJ (your jaw pops) as a result of ice chewing, but it hasn't kept me from doing it.

how do you stop i cant

I fully believe ice and sex cravings go hand-in-hand. I had NEVER heard of this theory in my life but all of a sudden found that I was constantly craving and chewing ice. For the last 21 years of my life I couldn't stand ice and, in general, do not like things that are too cold. At restaurants, my drink orders were always accompanied with "no ice, please". Then one day, about a month ago, I started chewing ice constantly--this coincided with around the 2-week anniversary of my boyfriend of 3 years being away as he had just found a new job out of town. I still made no connection because I had NEVER heard of the ice-and-sex relation. Anyways, when he came back after being gone for about a full month in total I explained to him my ice-fetish and he was like "ya, because of no sex". I was surprised, and he was surprised at my surprise because, according to him,"EVERYONE knows this". But after hearing that,it all made sense. I believe it because I don't think it's just coincidence that the only time in my life when I've enjoyed ice was during the longest period that I've gone without having sex since losing my virginity and having regular sex (4 years ago).
