Summer Restaurant Week 2004 - Steak Frites

Last night, I went to Steaks Frites which is participating in Summer Restaurant Week 2004. $20.12 buys you a three course lunch and $30.12 buys you a three course dinner. Foolishly, I forgot my camera (what kind of lousy bloger am I?), so I don't have any tasty images to make you druel. Hopefully, I can summarize the meal.

Their prix fix menu had three options for each of the courses. For my appetizer, I ordered the tuna tartar, with sea salt, preserved lemon, and mustard oil. My entree was the pave de beouf with smoked tomatoe and shallot compote and housemade fries. Finally for dessert, I had the green market peach Napoleon with vanilla cardamom ice cream.

This may not be all that interesting without the photos (who comes to this site for the writing?), but if anyone else is planning on going to Steak Frites for Restaurant Week, I would recomend the steak as the best value on the menu. The size of the steak was probably a little smaller than a tennis ball and was quite delicious with the compote. Someone else in my party had the jumbo sea scallops, but they only came with three scallops. My dessert was also on the small side, but I guess that's what you get for a prix fix menu at a New York restaurant. It seemed like the espresso chocolate pot de crème with a saffron white chocolate ganache was a better value.

Restaurant Week has always seemed like a scam to me. If you want to try a fancy restaurant, just save up enough to do it right, or go with someone and split an entree and two apps. I don't like the idea of the whole scaled back, discount menu.

strangely, i feel like my "scaled back" meal was better than someone else's meal in my group. much better. more steak, more food, and cheaper.

Getting dragged to a Restaurant Week meal Monday night. So we'll see how ripped off I feel after...
