Stupid Verizon and Your Stupid DSL Service

POST #    1083

Yesterday, I was dealt a major blow to my grand apartment plans. Verizon said I can't get DSL service because I'm not on a copper wire, but a fiber optic one. Since I don't have cable access in the building, that leaves me with no recourse. Sigh. For an Internet addict like myself, this is a problem.

On the plus side, I can spend more time with my friend, television. I also called Time Warner again and they said that someone else called in about service and they might pull a line. That's the sweet to this sour story. It's only mildly comforting though. Nothing like a really nice computer with dial-up service. Woo!

And what ever happened to fiber optics being the wave of the future?!? Stupid Verizon and your dependence on old technology. Stick that copper wire up your ass! If you can provide me with DSL though, I'll gladly pull it out for you. Thanks.

Someone, please cry me a river.

I had the same exact problem, forcing me to go with TW cable, which I hate. My next door neighbor has DSL, as does the rest of the building. Once, a Verizon rep told me that I could request a new phone number and hope that it ran on copper. I asked for a guarantee and she couldn't give me one, so I declined.

Wait. You have cable TV? You can get cable internet access, then, no? Why not go wireless, while you're at it, too?

i was told to call and see if they can "migrate my line onto copper wire."

josť, i actually have directTV, not cable. but someone in the building also put in a request, so i have my fingers crossed.

so sad, i feel your pain...internet service is my life line and the computer my dear friend. if had a television i would be all set, but they are far to expensive on this damn island....though carib beer is cheaper than water

That sucks. So how could you live without cable. Before I moved into where I am now thats one of the htings i looked it to but I need to be connected to work and stuff.

Damn! You'd think that you would be eligible for some kind of kick-ass high speed internet service with your fiber optic line! Doh! I'm surprised there's no cable in your building!? This is America, right? ;)

If you have Direct TV, how about direcway.com? Cost is higher and bandwidth is less (500kbps down and 50 kbps up), but it is still better than dialup. If a neighbor already has cooper wiring, you can share the line with them using wifi. Some ISP's will even split the bill for you if you're sharing with a neighbor (i.e. speakeasy.net).

Or now that wifi is so popular, you can scan for wifi networks and see if there are any open networks available. I know many people (including myself) who can get free Internet from a neighbor's wifi networks. I'm also sharing my line for neighbors to use.

Today is the MTA Photography ban protest. Hope to see you there.

Um, have you fired up your Airport card in the building? Or, run KisMAC?

Not that I would EVER suggest copping anyone else's wireless.

I do not encrypt my own, and anyone who wants to hang around about a half mile radius of my house is welcome to check their email and update their blog.

Yeah, I know, it's not really a solution. But, I will say that every place I have run KisMAC, I have found woreless access points. Just for fun.

i'm reluctant to go with the satellite internet access because of the speed/expense and such. i don't have a wifi card or anything like that, so i'll have to get someone with one of those to visit my apartment and see if there is a network around.

i'll see how painful dial-up gets when i finally move my computer, but i'm sure i'll be suffering right away.
