First Night

I'm still in the process of moving a lot of stuff to my new apartment, but last night, I spent my first night there. With my newly assembled bed (started over the weekend and finished two nights ago), some phone service, and TV service, almost everything is set for my moving in. It's going to take some getting used to in my new place though. I have yet to learn the exact number of steps from bedroom to bathroom, bedroom to TV, TV to bathroom, and kitchen to TV. So many details to learn. I've also had my first run-in with my platform bed. I was warned that the edges were a drawback by several friends, but I'm glad I just brushed my shin into the edge and wasn't going full tilt towards the bed.
Because the phone line is finally working and connected, that means my DirectTV is also active. Excellent. No complaints about that yet, but I'm still working my way through learning the system. There is one thing I do know, I love TiVO! So far, I have set it up to record Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and Scrubs. It automatically recorded Finding Nemo for me, which was nice of it. I told the DirectTV people several times that I don't think I'll ever need to leave the house again.
In this process of putting together my bed, I also learned that man's best friend is not the dog, but the power tool. It made finishing up my bed so much easier. With about fifty screws to fasten, I think my hand would be pretty sore if I didn't use a power drill. Thank the inventors of the power tool, whoever they are.

What were you watching there?

i got a power screwdriver as a high school graduation gift. it was really weird because i was going to college, so it wasn't like i was putting together a lot of stuff (and my dorm had brick walls so i couldn't screw anything in anyway), and it was from some second cousins who i never see. sadly, i have no idea where it is now that i would actually have a use for it.

i got luggage for highschool graduation. i was totally unamused by it, but it's been one of the best gifts i've ever received... but not nearly as good as the toolbox/drill set that i got for christmas one year. yay tools.

Welcome to Tien's palace of love...

Enjoy the TIVO, it's one of life's greatest joys. What kind of tips do you need?
Posted by: dan at May 26, 2004 2:39 PM
oh yeah, palace of love.
dan, i'm thinking, things to look out for. or, the best part of using tivo is. be sure to do this. etc, etc.

TiVo tips? Yeah, keep track of your to do list, just in case your evil friends messes with your season pass and you end up with a Tivo full of crappy show. That and record Sportscenter by time and not season pass, since every time it airs it's seen as a new show...

my tivo tip is to not use it. otherwise, i'll always be stuck at home watching tv.

That must be so exciting to finally get to spend your first night in your new place!
(Who wants to place a bet on when Tien really does bang his shin on the platform??)

does anyone know how to manage the shows that the tivo automatically records?
and matt, yes, it was exciting. i'm spending tonight there too, so i might just hit my shin sooner than later.

the "tivo recommendations" are based on your season passes and thumbs up, thumbs down ratings. say you like law and order. give it 3 thumbs up and you'll have more law and orders recorded for you than you know what to do with. or if the tivo records shows that you hate, give them thumbs down and it will stop. I generally don't care enough to do this since they will get deleted anyway to make room for stuff. except for reality shows, those i get rid of.
You can also set up wishlists, which are helpful. I have one for "michigan" and "football," so if there are any games on espn classic it will record them for me. also good for favorite actor, keyword, etc.
considering you actually have groceries delivered to your house, i don't know if you should be allowed full use of tivo. we may have to mandate some outside time for you.

Exactly, tien - you need to allocate at least a half hour each day to walking outside. Even if it's to McDonald's, that's okay, just as long as you're not a classic shut-in.

excellent tips dan. i'll have to use those thumb buttons more. i must say, it was strange to see them.
