The Adidas 1

POST #    1006

Adidas is set to launch a new high-tech shoe in December. The Adidas 1 is a running shoe that is built around a 20-megahertz computer, a motor, a stainless steel cord, and a battery. All this allows for the cushioning of the shoe to adjust while a person is running, changing depending on conditions and how a person is using them. Additionally, the shoes will come with instructions on a CD and push button controls with light-emitting diodes. The 1 is set to retail for a hefty $250.

The shoe whore in me really wants a pair of these, but the common sense in me knows that I have no need for these since I don't run. Who knows which will win out come December when they come out. I'm also not quite sure the last time I bought a pair of new sneakers over $100. That may sound insane, but again, I'm a recovering sneakerholic.

but they're...ugly. gold. ick.

seconding corie, those shoes are ugly. Why would you ever want a computer under your feet?

Posted by: tevren at May 6, 2004 9:13 PM

yes, they are ugly, but they are bionic!! bionic i say, bionic!!

Posted by: tien at May 6, 2004 10:10 PM

Ugly is not the issue here... it's the total cool-geek factor. Tien, I totally agree. Computer under your feet bionic freaking shoes! Hells yeah!

But still, even being a sneakerholic myself, I don't really know if I really want to part with $250 for a pair of running shoes for my not running ass... but still, soooo cool.

I happen to be in the market for new running shoes. My current pair has had hundreds of running miles over the last 10 years, including a few marathons and 15k of running per week. The 1 looks tempting, but I wouldn't get it because of the looks, cost, and wasted weight on the electronics and batteries. Perhaps, I would change my mind if the looks are different or maybe I'm just old fashion. I can see this useful for the athelete who needs to gain every single second in a race.

When you said motor and stainless steel cord, I got an image of a chainsaw or lawn mower type affair, in a shoe. A pair of THOSE would definitely be right at the top of my wishlist.

a computer in a shoe? I have a feeling that the first group of people who buy this will be disappointed, because you just know there will be problems with it.

call me crazy (many people have in the past), but I really love those shoes. I dont think they are ugly at all. Or maybe they are so ugly I find them appealing. I'd love to see them in person.

keith, i'll probably check them out when they are released. whether or not i buy them is another question. i might even want to buy them to sell them again on ebay.

jason, i'm not sure if this is meant for anyone that is racing, but more for the more casual runner. that casual runner has to be rich though.

oscar, if they ever come out with those, i would probably get a pair as well. people sure would get out of my way!

justin, can you imagine if the shoe goes crazy? the computer goes nuts like when lisa had those tap shoes?

christina, i'm with you. they aren't even that ugly. i own plenty that are uglier. they will probably come out in some more colors too.

jason, you're still wearing running shoes from 10 year ago? i must of read that wrong. if you're running that much, you should be changing shoes every 6 months! it's bad for your knees/feet/hips not to!

i still think those are mad ugly, bionic or not.

Posted by: corie at May 7, 2004 11:03 AM

those are some sexy shoes!!! i wonder how they would maintain their bonic-ness while jumping in mud puddles, stainless steel cord or not.

I just bought a pair of, 130 dollar, new balance 991's. I have bad feet so it's easy for me to spend money on good running shoes. I would definitly buy a pair of these running shoes if they can tell me that the water isn't gonna mess them up. And everybody... all good running shoes are ugly!

Well I think the price is insane. $250? And yes another design would be nice. I agree they're ugly. But I like the idea.
