Report: "Tens of Millions Americans Are Fools!"

POST #    957

Over the weekend, I was watching the news, which reported that 40% of Internet users in the United States were using a high-speed connection. Today, a Times article looks at some whackos that refuse to change to high-speed connections. When I first read the headline, I thought, "What the hell...given the option of switching, who the hell would use a dial-up?!?" After reading the article, I still think that.

The Times says these people are "consumers content to pay for a service that is less than optimal, and at times even frustratingly slow, because they say greater speed is not worth the trouble of starting over with a new telecommunications provider and getting a new e-mail address, even if the added cost is small." I read that and I see them as lazy. I mean really, getting a new e-mail address? Is it that hard to send all your friends an e-mail, saying you've joined the 21st Century? And the "trouble" in starting over with a new provider really isn't that much trouble (saying that is going to jinx me when I am getting DSL for my apartment).

If you don't upgrade your connection, think of all the things you're missing: illegally downloading music or movies, streaming porn connections, online casino games, and all the reading of news articles, sports columns, and of course blogs.

It's one thing if you're poor, and can't afford the connection or if they don't have it in your area, but if you can afford it and don't get it, all I have to say is
"People, people...get with the times!"

Couldn't have said it better Tien. Hey, what about people like me who upgrade but then can't figure out how to close their dial-up accounts and are plagued by recurring charges on the credit card? I already know the answer - I'm an idiot, but I'm no fool!

yeah oscar, i don't know what people would call you. i had an issue with earthlink though. they wouldn't let you cancel the account online. what's the deal with that? i was figuring so they could try to sell you on the phone, but they didn't do that to me at all.

can you still call it laziness when it results in a slower, more frustrating internet experience? i think it should be characterized as 'masochism'.

but if they think about it, all the time they spend on waiting, they can just get the high-speed stuff installed. and if time is money, then they would save money if they got a faster connection. foolishness, i say!

what about those of us with free dial-up access? I'm thinking of getting a high-speed connection, but it is going to involve drilling holes in walls, rewiring, and co-op board approval. Sigh.

A programmer friend of mine in NC still swears by dial-up. I just don't get it, just don't get.

Then there's my fiancée, whose dial-up is so frustrating I only use her computer under the most dire circumstances. But I'd be hard-pressed to call her a fool, Tien.

i get all the high speed internet i need at work. When I'm home, there are many, many things i'd rather do than look at stuff online. thus, my dialup account.

Posted by: dan at April 20, 2004 9:22 AM

joe - free dialup!?! hmm. why drill holes? can't they just staple the cable to your wall?

josé - programmer using dial-up? that's just wrong. and i'm not saying your fiancee is a fool, but you can't tell me that you won't get a high-speed connection when you start living together...

dan - they mentioned the high-speed at work thing, but if you didn't have that, how would you look at all your porn?

Posted by: tien at April 20, 2004 9:40 AM

You know it's bad if TIEN of all people calls somebody else lazy!! As Homer would say: "Sooooooooo Lazy.........."

I used it up to last year cause my computer's modem was a peice of crap and it wouldnt work when I even bought an ethernet card for it and everything. But volunteering for dial up?

And I recently just took my parent's credit card and went ahead and bought wireless cards and a router for their house. Now they are very happy with it. The way parents are, its the only way to insure that they have decent internet. For some reason doing that kind of thing for themselves seemed out of the question.

they sell porn on dvd now.

Posted by: dan at April 20, 2004 11:00 AM

Tien: I have already laid down the law regarding high-speed internet. When Jessie and I move in together it's gonna be cable or bust, baby! Cable or bust.

Posted by: josé at April 20, 2004 1:51 PM

justin - when you're right, you're right. but then again, sometimes i'm so lazy that i eat stale bread. i just have my priorities in order.

heather - i almost think parents are excusable, since they are old and everything. my parents got a cable modem earlier this year (or was it last year), but it took several attempts at explaining it.

dan - porn on dvd?!? what's next, porn blogs?!?

josé - cable or bust, how can one argue with that? you probably could have said, "if you love me, you'll get a cable modem when we're married."
