This Is Just Wrong

POST #    882

Every Tuesday, I get an email from Apple for "New Music Tuesdays" in their iTunes store. This week, one of the items in the email was for William Hung's pre-release EP. Just great. I didn't buy any of them, since I think that would be a waste of money, but I listened to the samples. He "sings", "She Bangs", "I Believe I Can Fly", "Rocket Man", and "Free". They are all horrible. I think Hung's rendition of "I Believe I Can Fly" is probably the worst of the bunch. This just wasn't right. Nobody should buy this. I'm not sure the guy understands that he's a joke.

Is it me, or does William Hung have Down's Syndrome? I'm not being snarky here, at all. He seems to have the classic characteristics.

No matter what, this whole thing infuriates me. The media is marketing him as a joke. It reminds me of part of American Splendor where they realize that the nerd is being completely exploited by MTV.

Sure, he's an adult and can make choices for himself, but still. It just sickens me. Laughing at a poor performance once or twice is one thing. Creating an ongoing joke, supported and funded by large companies specifically to make money off of someone's misfortune is another.

yeah, there is something that just isn't right about him. but he's at berkley, so he's not a complete idiot. i guess they don't teach common sense there though. i think his friends need to smack him upside the head.

As P. Diddy would say, "Its all about the Benjamins." And I'm not sure how much, but I bet this guy is getting paid plenty of money to do this.

I'm not quite sure, but I think I'd do it if the money was right.

I feel bad for what the media has done for him as well. He has a Forrest Gump-like quality, innocent, naive, and I hope in the end this guy's life won't totally wrecked, I don't want to see a E! True Hollywood Story about him that ends with him bankrupt and living on the streets somewhere.

William Hung is down here in Richmond this weekend, singing at our annual Chili Cookoff. You think half the city isn't going to be there? The man is a laugh riot.

You guys want a ticket, give me a call, I'll hook you up. It's gonna be a fun time. He goes on just before Fuel and Evanescence.

corie - he IS asian, and ppl with down syndrome used to be called mongloid idiots or something (the almond-shaped eyes). i think that's what adds to the incredulousness of the whole thing. the guys looks kind of mentally challenged, he acts like forrest gump, agrees to make himself a laughingstock, yet he goes to berkeley.

i hope he doesn't come out of this totally used and abused.

Posted by: jeannette at March 24, 2004 2:03 PM

maine, are you kidding? he's actually singing at real events? not just in bars?

jeannette, contrary to how you feel, i hope he does come out used and abused. that would be a lesson well learned. and maybe he would never sing again.

The whole William Hung thing is really troubling for me, and it's hard for me to articulate why I'm so annoyed, but in a nutshell, the way he's being portrayed and used is sort of like a Chinese minstrel - someone to laugh at and ridicule, because all the racial paranoia is projected onto him. I'm not hyper sensitive about these things, but it's really creepy. And I agree with everyone above: I hope Hung feels used and abused AND makes a lot of coin.

Oh, yes, he sings at real events. This is as real as it gets. And is he being exploited? Um... yeah.

In fact, this weekend, he's going to get the redneck royal treatment in VA. Yikes. Not for the squeamish.

i kid you not, but william hung's she bangs is today's #5 song. idiots!

Posted by: tien at March 24, 2004 11:39 PM

My god, this is just too much. I really don't understand why anyone would put themselves through such a think. I mean this is beyond the make an ass of yourself on reality TV thing, I am sure he'll make quite a bit of money out of this, but like Jen, it really bothers me with what the racial implications this whole Hung exploitation is creating.

Maybe I'm a little too sensitive to it, but Asian stereotype I've seen portrayed in the media lately really bothers me. It just keeps creating this stupid idea in people's mind of what Asian people are. Like when people got all up in arms about how Asian Americans' were portrayed in Better Luck Tomorrow. people were saying shit like "The movie was great but Asian kids don't act like that in real life!" OK then how the fuck are we suppose to "act"?!

I really hate Fuse for giving Hung this record deal, great he'll make some money from this, but hope he realizes that he's being the poster boy in helping to bring the Long Duck Dong stereotype back in full force.

I dunno, apparently he has a following in Hong Kong too. The HK newpapers interviewed everyone that he's been associated with in HK in and in the US.

Posted by: calvin at March 25, 2004 11:33 AM

... and apparently y'all will be subjected to a whole album. iTunes also has clips of him murdering "Rocket Man" and "I Believe I Can Fly" ... *groan*

this thing is just out of control. i think people need to stop buying his stuff. if he gets on billboard's top 40 or anything, i will lose what little faith i have in the music buying public.

here's something to think about, and you all have caught on. and it's not paranoia.

he appears to have downs syndrome and acts like an idiot onstage.

he's obviously the chosen stereotype that keith mentioned above. if he was an attractive asian guy (by western standards of course), who had no singing talent it would not be hyped up.

even something more to consider:

keep all else the same, except make william hung a white guy. do you think the media would hype it up?

keep all else the same, except make william hung a black guy. do you think the media would hype it up? consider how afraid the white media is of blacks and their respective activists.

keith is right...and i'll take it a step further.

the white controlled media is on a mission to preserve long duck dong forever.

it's pathetic.

Yeah, this is sickening! This is a freak show! I'm Asian, and even if I wasn't I'd be furious too. On a selfish note, I'm thankful that many Americans are too ignorant to realize that Filipinos are Asians.

Yeah, how Asians are portrayed in the media sickens me too. William Hung really isn't helping us at all-- especially the Asian males.

Here's an interesting article:

It totally relates.

I have a bet going. Does anyone have a website that can actually document that William Hung has downs?
