Eileen's - The Best Cheesecake in New York

POST #    878

Last night, Christina and I made a pilgrimage to Eileen's Special Cheesecake, which in my opinion is the best cheesecake in New York. I absolutely love the cheesecake at Eileen's, it's just delicious. It was all inspired by last week's entry on cheesecake, and it was well worth the wait. In fact, I bought a small cheesecake to bring home. I'll be having that for desert tonight with the rents. Following cheesecake, we had dinner at Lombardi's, which was better than I remember, but still doesn't live up to the cheesecake.

Again, if anyone wants to hit up Eileen's sometime, let me know. I would be more than happy to go again.

Why do you insist on posting such yummy treats so early in the morning? I inevitably see them right after my BF and proceed to crave whatever you've posted for the rest of the day.

yes, I've got half a cheesecake in the fridge here at work and now it is going to be more difficult to refrain from having some until after lunch.

btw, topping on cheesecake is WRONG!

I'm glad you pointed out the cheesecake topping being wrong because it's the wrongest thing I've seen today, aside from the bastard who took up three seats on the subway with his gym bags and crap.

That said, I'm totally down for going to Eileen's sometime.

sorry corie. maybe i should refrain from more cheesecake tomorrow morning?

joe, the plain cheesecake from eileen's is also excellent, but i love me some strawberries, so it's a natural progression for me.

jen, i'm sure you won't be disappointed. it's so light and tasty. mmm...

We should have a blogger cheesecake tasting...

Posted by: corie at March 23, 2004 10:03 AM

oh yeah!! that's a great idea. will it be a tasting or a taste-off? hmm. i've had the taste-off discussions before, but they have never come together.

Posted by: tien at March 23, 2004 10:09 AM

if loving topping on cheesecake is wrong, i dont want to be right!!! i love it with chocolate!

Posted by: rachelle at March 23, 2004 10:34 AM

can you ship some eileens to me so i can participate?

Posted by: rachelle at March 23, 2004 11:10 AM

ha! you love everything with chocolate!!

In a pinch I can handle a slight amount of topping, but the goopy strawberry stuff is a crime against cheesecake.

a chocolate-marbled cheesecake, however, is good stuff.

here's what you do:

each person brings a slice of cheesecake from a different place. then you cut the slices into bites and each person gets to taste a bit from each slice. then you argue over which is the best. just as long as there are enough slices/tastes for everyone, tummies are filled and the debates can ensue.

Posted by: corie at March 23, 2004 12:04 PM

slice?!? don't you mean a whole pie!! why limit ourselves?

and there has to be plain and maybe one with topping. this is the best idea ever. i like sometime in april to get this done.

when do you move into your new apt? it could be the ultimate cheesecake housewarming.

or, we could all just bring cheesecake to a bar and create a spectacle.

Count me in. I'm going to come down on the side of toppings on cheesecake being a technical foul, wrong in a wonderful way. I don't think you lose points for eating it. But then I tend not to be a purist in most things, any more.

Best cheesecake I ever experienced was at a long-departed West Village place called OG's - I think it's long-departed, in any case. They had a chalkboard up when you came in that said, "If you have PLENTY OF TIME, then you have come to the RIGHT PLACE," which was their gentle way of telling you that you might not get served any time soon. It was the ground floor of a brownstone, full of mismatched tables, comfy chairs, and couches.

Anyway, they made a chocolate and creme-de-menthe cheesecake that was a formative experience in my teen years. With a coating of bittersweet dark chocolate poured along the top. It was to cheesecake what sex is to sex. If you know what I mean.

oooh, cheesecake taste tests - definately count me in too.

Posted by: dahl at March 23, 2004 1:21 PM

looks like there is plenty of interest in the cheesecake taste tests corie. i won't be moving until sometime later in april...hopefully before may. i suppose there could be a cheesecake thing at my place, but that's just out of the way for a lot of people.

Posted by: tien at March 23, 2004 3:45 PM

well, if we had it at my place it's pretty much guaranteed that it will be zero degrees and frigid, as witnessed by my last two host/excursions.

Posted by: corie at March 23, 2004 4:03 PM

me too! i love cheesecake, but sometimes you just can't have too much.

Posted by: jeannette at March 23, 2004 5:27 PM

Eileen's IS great, but I'm still partial to Junior's.

OG....must have been different than the one on 6th St (between Ave A & B, next to Industry)? But do check Oriental Grill when you're over that way, well worth it.

Posted by: Jo at March 23, 2004 8:02 PM

frigid? that's not possible in april, right?

Posted by: tien at March 23, 2004 10:55 PM

true, with spring arriving, it does seem unlikely, but corie does seem to have bad luck with weather. my place is always a possibility too...

Posted by: dahl at March 24, 2004 10:23 AM

sounds like we have at least two venue options.

Posted by: tien at March 24, 2004 11:43 AM

Jo - Yes, no relation to the Oriental Grill (a place I've been meaning to go to for ages). I don't even remember if it was OG's or Ogee's, or Ogees, or what; it was, um, a few years ago, before the world had moved on.

My monitor has some fresh new bite marks. I think it would taste better with a strawberry!
