Finally Watched LOTR

POST #    787

Going into the theater, I thought I would be the last person on earth (or at least the movie-going public) to see Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. To my surprise, there were a fair amount of people in the theater. Lots of middle-aged people, but I guess that's what happens when a movie can appeal to all age groups. The movie was excellent, but at over three hours, it was damn long. Several people went to the bathroom during the movie, with one guy going at least three times. Lucky for me, I stopped drinking fluids in the afternoon and went to the bathroom before it started.

The movie, despite the length, kept my attention through most of it with the beautiful images, the incredible action scenes, and via twists in the story (I've never read any of the books). Towards the end though, I kept thinking, "man, it looks like Frodo and Sam are going to make out." This happened at least two times, but maybe more. After that kiss on the forehead, I thought they were going to drop to the ground and... Anyway, homo-erotic overtones aside, Return of the King was excellent and I can see why it was nominated for so many Oscars. Besides, I love Top Gun too, which is probably the most homo-erotic movie out there.

Next on the movies I have yet to see - Lost in Translation.

omg... go see lost in translation RIGHT NOW. just walk - very casually - out of the office and treat yourself to a matinee. i'd go before sunday to avoid all the popcorn-movie types who will be coming out of the woodwork after the oscars to see what all the hype is about.

I'll be brave and confess: I haven't seen any of the LOTR movies. A friend lent me a copy of the first movie. I couldn't make it through the opening credits.

janelle, i've actually had lost in translation for almost 3 weeks on dvd.

joe, i think you might need to watch them. you're missing the major epic of our time. okay, not really.

I tried hard to watch that first one, but just knowing that weird furry creatures with odd names were soon to appear on the screen drove me away.

For a totally un-LOTR movie experience everyone should go see "All the Real Girls" at Anthology Film Archives after the photoblogger thingie tomorrow night.

joe, after that photoblogger thing, i plan on rushing home and catching the apprentice. that or maybe, maybe getting a drink.

if you haven't seen "City of God" or "The Station Agent" (not sure if the latter has screenings still), find the nearest showing. Were two of the very best films I saw last year.

Btw, I fully agree with the homo-erotic tension between Samwise and Frodo. Been building since the first film.

hey mase. i too loved the station agent. city of god is on the list of movies to see though. damn, that list is getting way too long.
