Peter Luger Steakhouse, a Pseudo Sendoff

POST #    775

Luger's steak for three. Two huge porterhouse steaks, medium rare.

Steak, German fried potatoes, and creamed spinach. Bye bye belt!

Rachelle and one set of gifts, tumblers and a magnet from the Transit Store.

Rachelle, sporting her Neighborhoodie and holding her Rachel Leb.com hot pants.

With Rachelle moving away in a little more than a week, there are only a few more days for her to do "New York things" before she leaves. Jeannette, Jess, Yvan, and I decided to take her for a farewell dinner at Peter Luger Steakhouse before she left (not that you need an excuse to go to Luger's, which has been open since 1887). I've been there at least 10 times, which doesn't sound like a lot, but at $50 per person, it's not cheap to eat there. In my opinion, it's worth every penny.

As a grizzled veteran of Peter Luger's (the others in our party had never been), I knew exactly what I wanted - steak, potatoes, and creamed spinach. Those are the three items that you must get, no questions asked. Optional items include tomatoes and onions (ordered), shrimp cocktail (ordered), and dessert (ordered). Steaks at Luger's are broiled and served on the plates they were cooked on. They are placed on small dishes so the oil pools on one end of the plate. Perfect for dipping. Complimentary with the $50 cost per person is a chocolate gold coin for everyone.

With Rachelle moving, I'm not sure who will supply me with pictures of themselves eating and making funny faces. Obviously, that's just one of the things I'll miss about Rachelle. In my heart, I secretly hope she moves back to New York after a brief stint in the Second City.

Tien, it may just be the picture, but that steak looks really black on the outside and really rare on the inside - is that how it was?

I'm intriqued by this Porterhouse "dinner for three". Do you know how many ounces it was altogether? My personal record is a 40 oz. Sirloin "dinner for two", but that was while I was on my hike so naturally my appetite was enormous!

justin, you would be correct. the top side of their steak is a nice and crispy. while it may not be for everyone, it certainly adds flavor. the steak pictured is the medium rare one, but their steaks tend to be more rare than other places. there are some parts that are more cooked, obviously.

as far as weight for the steaks, i have no idea. i think they were at least 1" thick before cooking.

Hey Tien, what's the story behind rachel leb?

Posted by: corie at February 19, 2004 11:43 AM

well, jake thought that her name was rachel leb based on her website and not rachelle b. all this despite it clearly saying her name in her "about" section. we found out when we went to dahlia's party and sam said something about it.

but jake still has the occasional slip-up. he called her rachel at one point during the big apple blog party thing.

Posted by: tien at February 19, 2004 11:55 AM

he was calling me rachel on purpose.. and my close friends know that my being called rachel is a lifelong, major pet peeve of mine so they are milking it.

Posted by: rachelleb at February 19, 2004 12:08 PM

so the greater question of whether the hot pants fit is still open. ???

Yeah, I only see steak for one in that picture, but I could eat porterhouse steak like a rat in a cocaine experiment.

And, I hope Rachelle moves back too - and I don't even know her!

Random reader, big fan. Dear god, those picts of pete lug's looks so freaking good.

I'd say Jake was calling you Rachel because he's too drunk and stupid not to realize better.

Posted by: Jen at February 19, 2004 6:22 PM

he did admit his stupidity when i reminded him that we emailled back and forth and my email wasnt rachel at rachel leb.com it was rachelle at rachelle b.com

Posted by: rachelleb at February 19, 2004 8:51 PM

oh, and how i knew he was doing it on purpose and not just drunk and stupid is because he said something along the lines of "hey, rachel.. or rachelle, as you like to be called... "

Posted by: rachelleb at February 19, 2004 8:53 PM

i think I'm infatuated with that steak. I keep returning to this page and staring and salivating.
