Restaurant Week 2004 - Dinner at Maya

POST #    725

Maya's table-setting.

Sangria.

Calamar Azteca - sauteed calamari/plaintain puree/arugula/adobo sauce

Carne Asada - grilled hangar steak/mashed purple potatoes/cactus salad/chile guajillo sauce

Chocoflan - dark chocolate/caramel flan/candied pecans

Last night, I went to Richard Sandoval's Maya, a fancy Mexican place that is often considered the best Mexican food in New York. Because it's Restaurant Week in New York, I had a three course meal for a reasonable $30.04.

Those that know me well, know that I don't really like Mexican food (it's mainly the bean thing), but I'm trying to branch out. By branch out, I mean go to eat Mexican food, but order the carne asada. Last night, of course was no different. I'm not sure if Maya can even be considered Mexican food though. It's fancy food with a Mexican flair. It was very, very good, and I left the restaurant very full.

Every dish was exquisitely prepared and presented. The calamari appetizer was a combination of flavors that almost exploded in my mouth. The sweet taste of the plantains and the bitter flavor of the arugula. Bueno. The carne asada was excellent as well, tender and delicious. The cactus salad also presented some slightly bitter flavors that were delightful. Desert was a flan that Sandoval named "Chocoflan". It was rich and delicious, with the candied pecans adding that extra "umph."

Overall, an excellent experience. I would gladly go back again. Maybe not for a regular priced dinner, but present me with a $30 prix fix for Restaurant Week and I'm all over it.

You must like Mexican food, for there is guacamole, the most delicious green thing God has graced us with. Carne asada looks delicious.

actually, i don't really like guacamole that much either. i'm also starting to give that a try. as far as i know, the guac at maya was excellent. well, the chips were excellent.

and my pictures of the food don't really do them much justice.

Oh man, I've gotta stop reading this stuff before breakfast - makes me want to go out for Mexican right now!

I am from Los Angeles and love Mexican food. Maya is one of the best places...on either coast! The guac. is chunky with just a hint of spice, fantastic. If I had only one drink to drink forever, it would be the margarita de oro, well after water! My favorite dinner is the Puerco de Pipian (sp?) pork tenderloin cooked with a spicy sauce then served topped with a sweet corn/pumpkin sauce, very rich very good. And the hostess, well both, very charming and very beautiful.
