Free Trip - Who's Coming With Me?

POST #    553

Tuesday night, when I went to the Nets game, I was waiting for Rachelle while she went to the bathroom. Someone came up to me and asked if I wanted to fill out a form for a chance to win a free trip. I was a bit wary about giving out my info, but I filled it out anyway. Today, I get a call from a strange number, pick it up and was told that I won! I won a 3 day, 2 night trip for two to one of three destinations - Las Vegas, the Bahamas, or Orlando. Guess which one I won't be going to. Hotel and airfare are both paid for. All I have to do is watch an hour long video about the company's services.

If I go to Vegas, I'll be staying at The Sahara, which is kind of out of the way. If I go to the Bahamas, I would stay at the Victorian in Freeport.

Both of those options are very tempting. Vegas during March Madness (or any time of year) and semi-warm temps, or the Bahamas during the winter with mid-70's. Decisions, decisions.

Be sure to look for hidden costs in this "free" trip. I once won a "free" cruise, including the airfare to Florida for it. Sounds like a similar deal, as they claimed "all" I had to do was tour some condo in a new community that was being built.

It, of course, wasn't really free. There was port charges, passenger destination charges, and traveler registration fees. All told, the "free" cruise would have cost $385 a person. Needless to say I passed on it, though it still would have been a substantially cheaper trip than the real ticket price.

I hope that this is not the case for your prize, and that it actually is free, but I'd be just a little wary.

i'd be skeptical of this too, but then i always am. if it actually is free and you can go when you want/stay at a decent place, then that's cool. free trip to vegas is always nice.

I think everything is a scam, so don't pay any attention to me. I'm like carl everett, except i do believe there were dinosaurs. maybe.

i agree with the others. it's almost certainly a scam. "we just want to show you a brief presentation on copper pots/timeshares/real estate developments"

i went to a bridal show earlier this year and gave my info (big mistake) and had ppl calling my cell constantly telling me i'd won a trip to this place or that.

sucks that these ppl are allowed to perpetrate these scams!!

yeah, tien, are you sure you grew up in nyc?

Posted by: dan at November 7, 2003 4:50 PM

is anybody really sure that tien grew up in nyc? he's not jaded, he's not bitter, not snobby, not skeptical, he doesn't know any history of the city, doesnt know where anything is, just went to chelea market for the first time like last week. . .shall i go on? (i kid, i kid!!!!)

Posted by: rachelleb at November 7, 2003 5:04 PM

that being said, i think you should still check it out to see if it really is FREE!!!!! whoo! my friend won a trip off a radio station once and there werent any hitches.. i went along. airfare, hotel, & tickets to see the packers play in dallas

well, i'm just going for an hour. halley told me to watch out for the drugs in my drink. and as long as i leave with my body intact, i dont think i have an issue with giving up an hour or two of my time. and it's tuesday. there's nothing on tv.

hmm, new york. it might all be a lie. a big fat lie. but i don't think it is. but there are times when i'm kind of snobbish. in college a tad, but not as bad as the other "new yorkers" who weren't really form new york city. that's what i hated the most. people from long island or new jersey that said they were from "the city." i'm sorry, no, you're not.

Posted by: tien at November 7, 2003 5:15 PM

Hey now, no ripping on native New Jerseyans please!

Haha, actually, though I'm originally from NJ, I'd never claim to be from "the city," what a loser I'd be then.

And, interestingly enough, when I was younger and I referred to "the city" I was always talking about Jersey City, as it was where all my relatives lived and when we were going to "the city" for a visit, it was to see them.

And do watch out for drugged drinks... Maybe this is all a giant organ harvesting scam perpetrated by Amway, or is it Alticor now?

you have 2 kidneys...maybe you wont miss one. and be sure to load up on beer...so ur livers useless to everyone including urself.

jersey rocks. i think youre mistaken with who exactly claim theyre new yorkers. from my experiences, nearly all of the people ive dealt with who say theyre from new york were from long island. people from nj just say theyre from "the burbs."

So.... you go? This was obviously a scam - but what did they try to pull on you.

Posted by: jake at December 17, 2003 11:34 AM

Im originally from Jersey and I live in the city now. To be quite honest, you "real city" folks are the worst, crying "we are the real city people." All that means to me is that youve been living off your fathers hard work getting ripped off far longer then I have.

Posted by: Jake Jenkins at December 17, 2003 11:36 AM

but don't you see, we are the "real city" people. ripped off, huh? we're not necessarily getting ripped off. maybe you are though. maybe you should move back home if you feel you are getting ripped off.

Posted by: tien at December 17, 2003 11:43 AM

back to the scam. (and i am not Mr. Jenkins) what happenned with that.

Posted by: jake at December 17, 2003 1:55 PM

hey jake, as for the "scam," they gave me a voucher for travel. i have yet to mail it out to claim my trip, but it seems legit. they did try to get me to sign up though. i just wasn't having it.

Posted by: tien at December 17, 2003 3:26 PM

Im pretty sure you ahve to pay once you send that voucher out. Seems like shady dealings to me. What was teh name of the company? I "won" this trip too, as did a friend that was with me at the game. And these people wont stop calling me.
