get of the freaking fence!!

POST #    456

***note: there will be many uses of fuck or its variants in this post, but we all know, that it's okay. i might use shit though, which was not covered in the ruling. oh well.***

you know what i'm sick of? people not having one sports team they follow. take new york for example. we're in the middle of the major league playoffs and the evil empire is playing the boston red sox. now, as a mets fan, i cannot like the team in pinstripes. in my case, i actually hate them. i don't like any of this, "oh, well, i'm from new york, i'm going to cheer for the yankees," bullshit if you're a mets fan. i don't believe in loyalties extended to rivals in city sports. i would like nothing more than the evil empire losing to the red sox tomorrow. it would make my day actually. and if the red sox went on to win the world series after that? even fucking better. the enemy of my enemy is my friend. and to all those people that are on the fence about cheering for teams? "oh, i just cheer for new york." fuck that. i don't want you cheering for my team. just cheer for the other teams, i don't want you supporting my team, i don't want you sporting my team's merchandise, or buying my team's tickets. take your fucking money and go elsewhere. so i might bitter might be because the mets are lousy, but i'm not going to change my allegiances because of that. i don't want glory for a rival just because i have something in common with them. if it were college football, i don't cheer for ohio state because they are in the big 10, i don't cheer for michigan state because they are in michigan too.

also, fair weather fans are the fucking worst. if you don't admit your a fan of a team when they are lousy, you don't deserve to be a fan of them when they are good. where were the yankee fans in the 80's? non existent. on a similar note, if you don't follow the team at all for the whole season, don't fucking come out of the closet and start cheering towards the end of the season. if you don't really follow sports in the regular season and watch the playoffs, fine, but don't say, oh yeah, i'm a fan of so and so just because they are in the playoffs.

takeaway lesson...pick one fucking team and cheer for them and against the other team. when your team is out of contention, cheer against your rivals no matter how much you might love the city you and your rival team are in.

goooooo SOX! P.S. I wouldn't think you'd be so into this whole 'team spirit' thing, seeing as you're so down on jingoism. if you remove 'Mets' and insert 'the US', you'd sound like everyone you hate. goooooooo SOX! and I would say that any day of the year. Any year.

i would liken it more to national politics than international relations. ie, stick with one party and fuck the other. i'm becoming more loyal to my party as well.

i agree with you and jess about "fairweather" .. the worst.. think minn vikings fans. ew!

since im not really a baseball fan and im one of those ho-hum .. i live in ny so i might as well cheer for the yankees people then i have to think about football when you talk about team allegiance. (i do feel bad for the cubbies though)

ok. so. everyone knows i love the packers.. but if the packers arent making it to the playoffs there's no way i'm cheering for anyone in the central division who i consider to be our rivals! 1) da bears? uh no. 2) the vikings? please. 3) detriot? kind of a soft spot for Mariucci since he was Favre's QB coach but there's no way im cheering for detriot. 4) TB - i might cheer for them since they're a soft spot too. my floridian relatives like them and i used to have an oversized clicky TB pen when i was a little kid. it had a pirate on it.

i guess my point is that you dont go a whole season hating another team and then when you dont make it and the other team does, do a 180 and start cheering for them. a rivalry is a rivalry all year long no matter what. i've had this argument with people .. who think that like if the packers dont go then you should then cheer for whoever is from your division. like if mn goes you cheer for them because it makes your division look good and somehow makes your team look good. i so dont agree with that.

i guess im agreeing with you in the end, but i know that the whole yankees/mets thing has an extra sensativity attached for some people (ahem, like you)

ps. i dont think tb is in the nfc central div any more.. but back in the day..
pss. sorry this post is a big fat ramblefest. im kind of half asleep.

if fsu doesnt make it to the bowl game there's NO WAY im cheering for florida just because they're both florida teams. i guess that relates to the ny/mets thing.

ok. im going back to bed.

i used to work with this guy who was a lifelong new yorker and he refused to change his allegiance to his baseball team, the brooklyn dodgers.

I get a lot of shit from people around here for not liking Philly teams. I'm from Pittsburgh, grew up liking pgh teams, why should I change? I get a lot of "you live in Philly now, you should like the eagles." Fuck that. 20 years of liking one team, out the window b/c i live 300 miles away now? I wouldn't want an Eagle fan living in pgh to start liking the steelers, we don't need import fans. You like who you like, case closed.

I saw that more fans were at the 3 marlins games last week than during 3 separate months of the regular season. Thats sad. The make Brave fans look like die-hards.

Side note: show me a yankee fan, I'll show you someone with a deep dark hole where their heart should be. Go sox.

From the bottow of my deep dark hole: 1918

Damn, that was the best game I've ever been to. I tried to call Mao to rub it in but he wouldn't pick up the phone.
