cheesesteak gate

POST #    298

a couple of days ago, presidential hopeful john kerry was in philadelphia, trying to drum up support for his 2004 presidential campaign. now, i'm not saying if i support the guy or not, but he made a blunder that might cost him the tough philly electorate. in a trip to pat's king of steaks, kerry asked for swiss cheese! he didn't even ask for the snootier american cheese or provolone cheese. upon finding out that swiss was not offered, he opted for the standard cheez whiz. i wonder how this miscue will play with the union leaders that he was eating with. i'm sure all they could do was shake their heads wondering how they could voice support such a prissy candidate in their union halls.

when abc news asked kerry's staff for comment, they said, "things never go right the first time, just ask the bush administration." quite a witty response.

i wonder why they stopped at pat's and not at geno's steaks. was it an executive decision or was it because pat's was rated citysearch's best of 2003 for cheesesteak?

from the philadelphia inquirer article:
"Kerry gamely nibbled away at a cheesesteak hoagie after asking photographers - in vain - not to photograph him in that messy act. (He had asked owner Frank Olivieri to put Swiss cheese on his steak, but Olivieri set him straight. Swiss cheese was not an option. So Cheez Whiz it was.)"

you can also read the entry about this stop on kerry's blog (written by a staff member named jon favreau, i presume not the actor).

"i really wanted swiss cheese."

I remember seeing the picture of this on the news. To funny. And to think.....all us born and raised out here have never even tasted one. :) (the swiss sounded good to me) ha ha

are geno's and pat's the ones where you sit outside? if so, i went to one of them en route to a sixers game. it was cold outside and we didn't have a car.

i've actually never been to either of them, but i plan to go to at least one soon. and i hear both have outdoor seating only.

and if you remember, geno's was in the video for "motown philly" by boys II men. man, that song was great!

personally, I don't see tomato or lettuce having a place anywhere on a cheesesteak. mushrooms, onions, and peppers, sure, but none of that "cold" veggie stuff. He loses major points for that alone, though I suppose he could blame that on the people making it.
