practice makes...far from perfect
today, i had practice for the "hong kong dragonboat festival in new york" (you would think they could come up with a better name) race which takes place on august 9th and 10th. it doesn't help that you only have 7 people at practice. in a typical boat, you have at least 14 people - 12 rowers, 1 drummer, and 1 steerer. we had 6 rowers and were lacking a drummer. so sad.
not our boat, but at least they have a drummer. (there are better photos on the hkdbf site.)

hmm...fun. it's okay. i mean, i'm doing it to help out my friend's dad who is a sponsor, so they have a boat. it's the sino radio/tv boat. you know, that chinese tv and radio station? well, maybe you don't know. i wouldn't know if it wasn't for my friend. if you're really interested, i can ask. it will tie up a whole weekend in august though, not to mention practice this sunday.

so it's not fun? if it's not fun, then i don't want to do it. what weekend in august? do i have to know how to swim (aka, is it likely that i will end up in the water at any point)?

well, its not that much fun. i mean, if you are rowing and stuff, it's hard work. that said, this boat isn't really coming close to finishing first, so i guess it's more about having fun than about winning. nope, you don't have to know how to swim, life vests are provided. i guess all you have to know is how to kick if you go into the water, which is unlikely and advised against.
